Wax Melts: What's all the hype?

Wax melts are beginning to pop up all over the place, yet despite their popularity we still find people asking what they are, and what all the hype is about. This blog explains what they are, how to use them, and if they are really worth all the praise they get.

What are wax melts and where did they come from?

Wax melts are pieces of scented wax without the wick - plain and simple. Everyone knows about a candle, they've been a much loved feature of homes for many years. Yet many people are still unaware of wax melts. They originate from chandlers looking to find a use for left over wax. Since then they have developed and become a popular product in their own right. But why are they popular, and why would someone choose them over a candle?

Why all the hype?

By removing the wick, you are left with a much stronger and more intense fragrance to fill your home.

Candles are well known for being a popular way to bring fragrance to your home. What many people don’t realise is that the flame that burns from the candle wick actually creates a barrier and blocks some of the fragrance escaping to fill your room. By removing the wick in, you are left with a much stronger and more intense fragrance to fill your home.

Lots of people also see them as a safer option from a candle, particularly if they have young kids or pets running around. Electric burners can be used to create the fragrance in a home without any flame. We do find that the traditional burners with a tea light underneath does give a better fragrance throw and also gives the much loved ambience of a flickering flame. Traditional burners are often still a safer alternative to candles though, as the flame is tucked into the enclosed space of the burner. This way it is still visible but not completely exposed.

Why should I buy them?

They are often a lower cost alternative to candles.

Wax melts are a great alternative to candles. They are often a lower cost alternative to candles, yet they give you that more intense fragrance that really does fill your home. Our wax melts also come infused with dried petals which we are unable to offer in our candles due to the fire hazard they can create being so close to the flame. Wax melts also offer a great opportunity to get a sample flavour of all the fragrances we offer.

How to use your wax melts?

When you get your pack of wax melts, we recommend you begin by making sure your burner is clean and ready for use. You should then add no more than two wax melts to your burner. This will give you enough fragrance to fill a large area. If you do find your room is too large however, you can always try adding more if required. If you are using a traditional tealight burner (like the one featured in the photos and found for sale here) then we recommend you use a natural unscented tealight. The tealight should always be unscented to avoid mixing a combination of fragrances but it is also best to avoid paraffin wax as it can be toxic.

It is also essential that you use a four-hour burning tealight as tealights that burn longer for this can make your dish get too hot. As a result, the fragrance can get lost quicker and it can increase the risk of fire while using your burner. We offer the perfect solution with our natural, 4-hour tealights for sale here. They give you a safe and cleaner burn. When you find your wax melts are losing their scent after using a few times, simply clean out the old wax from your burner and replace them with new wax melts.
